Champions League sets record with 78 goals in a single matchday

Aston Villa vs Fenerbahçe

The second matchday of the 2026/27 Champions League season was the highest-scoring in the competition's history: 18 matches produced 78 goals. That was seven more than the previous record, set on the third matchday of last season. On Wednesday, October 14, teams scored 46 times across nine matches.

According to UEFA's figures, spectators saw at least five goals in half of the matches that round. Liverpool beat LASK 6-3, Aston Villa thrashed Fenerbahçe 6-0, Inter lost 3-4 to Club Brugge, and PSG won 4-2 away at Manchester City.

Real Madrid score three times in seven minutes

The most dramatic turnaround came in Rome. By the 83rd minute, Real Madrid were trailing Roma 1-3. Carlos Espí then reduced the deficit, Endrick equalised, and Antonio Rüdiger scored the winner in the 89th minute. All three scoring moves began with deliveries from Arda Güler.

Liverpool newcomer Bradley Barcola made his mark in Linz. The Frenchman scored his first three goals for the club in a single match. According to Opta, it was the first hat-trick of his entire senior career, including appearances for the national team. The 6-3 win was Liverpool's highest-scoring European match since the 2001 UEFA Cup final, when the English side beat Alavés 5-4.

After the match, Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola singled out Barcola and Florian Wirtz, both of whom had faced questions the day before about their lack of goals. According to the coach, both had an excellent game.

The new figure cannot be explained simply by an increase in the number of participants. Both the current and previous records were set under the same format: 36 clubs and 18 matches per round. The average on October 13-14 was 4.33 goals per match, compared with 3.94 during last season's record round.

The opening matchday of the 2026/27 season produced 69 goals and now ranks third in the competition's history. Two of the three highest-scoring Champions League matchdays took place this autumn.
